Dead Rising 2 Case 0 Review.

Dead Rising 2 Case 0 is a newly released game exclusive to the Xbox Live Arcade that serves the dual purpose of being a demo to those who want to try out the formula of Dead Rising 2 and a full Xbox Live Arcade title. Is this unique game worth your time and four hundred Microsoft Points?

This is my Boomstick!

The Summary:

In Dead Rising 2 Case 0, you play as the main protagonist Chuck Greene, who after the opening cinematic has been left stranded in the small town of Still Creek with is young daughter Katey. Chuck and Katey soon discover Still Creek has just recently suffered from a zombie outbreak and Chuck creates a safe house at the towns local gas station to keep them both safe. Chuck now must find a way for him and his daughter to escape the zombie infested town while trying to find a vaccine called Zombrex to prevent Katey from becoming a zombie.

Once you start roaming the streets of Still Creek, it is very tempting to explore the town and kill zombies with the many creative and fun weapons that you find, but you have a limited amount of time to complete each objective, so this puts a damper on the zombie killing fun. Once you have found some Zombrex for Katey, you find a broken motorbike that needs repaired, luckily Chuck being the all around handy man that he is, can fix anything. Your new objective is to find the parts needed to repair the motorbike, and once again you find yourself exploring Still Creek with only a certain amount of time to complete your objective. This time though, you will come across some survivors of the zombie outbreak. While most of them are merely just side quests and optional for you to save, there are a couple that must be saved in order to progress with the mission. The first survivor you find is the owner of the local pawnshop, which once saved opens his store so you can buy various items with the cash that you have found in Still Creek and one of the parts that you need.

After you have located all of the parts needed to repair the motorbike, you then only have one task left, which is to give Katey her Zombrex dose. After you do, the games only boss appears, or as fans of the first Dead Rising will remember, a psychopath. After what can be a difficult or easy battle depending on what weapons you have in your inventory for the fight, you then are able to escape Still Creek and will have experienced the full set up for Dead Rising 2.

The psychopath you must defeat.
Though the story may be short and the missions are very standard, it is very impressive at the amount of things you can do in such a small title. It is fun to run around the town and find different outfits to put Chuck in, some that make him look cool and others that make him look ridicules like the waitress outfit. There are a great variety of weapons in Dead Rising 2 Case 0, from chainsaws to dinner plates, electric drills to garbage bags, even a fire extinguisher that freezes zombies, it is fun to see the different effects each weapon has on the zombies, and that is the true highlight of this game and what makes it fun. That is why the combo weapons are such a great addition to the Dead Rising series, mowing down zombies with a paddlesaw is great fun!

The Breakdown:

Story - There really isn’t that much of a story here. Considering that Dead Rising 2 Case 0 is a prologue to its bigger brother Dead Rising 2, it gets the job done. By the time the end credits go across the screen, you will have a better liking and understanding for Chuck, and appreciate his motives to protect his daughter Katey.

Graphics - It’s now been four years since the original Dead Rising was released. You would think that in this day and age the graphics would have improved, but the graphics are hardly any better than its predecessor. The one thing that is noticeable though is the large amount of zombies that appear on screen at once, which is a improvement from the original Dead Rising.

Sound - Still Creek can be a quite place, but when you are killing zombies, rather its the sound of a baseball bat crushing those in your path or a chainsaw ripping through a large crowd of zombies, the sound of the weapons and the sound of the gore is very satisfying. The music in the game is very appropriate and the end theme is a very awesome song.

Playability - The Controls of this game are very standard and very simple, which is a good thing as it is very easy to run around killing zombies in creative ways. The replay value of this game is high and it will take multiple playthroughs to see everything Dead Rising 2 Case 0 has to offer and earn all the achievements. It is a lot of fun just running through Still Creek and killing zombies and not having to worry about completing missions on time, which adds to the replay value a lot. It is also a huge plus that there are no major issues or glitches to worry about, which makes for a very fun and enjoyable experience.

Entertainment - It will take the average player to complete Dead Rising 2 Case 0 around two or three hours their first time around, but it is possible to get many more hours from this small title. I myself have put over twelve hours into this game, which is more than you would expect from a five dollar title. The design of the game is nothing groundbreaking, but the town of Still Creek is laid out nice and the missions get the job done. The variety of weapons and creative ways to kill zombies are very impressive.

Pros and Cons:

Pros - The combo weapons are a great addition that makes this game very fun. The large amount of zombie that you are able to see on screen at once adds to the experience. It is also impressive many weapons there are and how many ways you can kill zombie. The AI of the survivors has improved from Dead Rising. Your saved character from Dead Rising Case 0 can be transferred to Dead Rising 2. A lot of game for only five dollars.

Cons - The most disappointing part of this whole game and its predecessor is the fact that you have a time limit to complete missions. It takes away from the funniest part of the game, which is killing zombies. The graphics are a bit disappointing. The save system hasn’t changed from the first Dead Rising and still requires you to find a restroom to save which is also an unfortunate return. When you talk to survivors they talk to you through text instead of actually having a voice.

Recommended For:

I recommend this game to any fan of Dead Rising, you will not be disappointed. Anyone who loves bloody and gory games and people who love to kill with creativity. I also think that anyone who has any interest in this game or Dead Rising 2 should at the very least download the trail version of the game. And I also recommend this game to any zombie fan!

Game Rating:

Story - 15/20
Graphics - 10/20
Sound - 20/20
Playability - 20/20

Total - 85/100 = 8.5 out of 10
